The trick to a slow burn, however, is packing it tightly with high-quality, nicely ground weed and using rolling papers that like to take their time. Photo by iStock / Getty Images Plus

Use a grinder

First things first: Grinding the weed before rolling is a must; a loose grind and larger pieces of cannabis burn more quickly and more unevenly. To get an even burn, break the cannabis into even pieces. And the best way to do that is to use a grinder, although there are a few other options that don’t require using a grinder.

Rolling papers are usually made from wood pulp, hemp or rice. While wood pulp papers are the most common in dispensaries, they, unfortunately, also burn more quickly and are usually bleached, which, again, alters their burn rate. That said, they are a good option for beginners.

While a good grind is important, don’t overdo it. Weed that’s too finely ground can prevent the air from circulating through the joint and ruin the smoking experience. The latter burn slower than wood pulp papers, but are sturdier than rice papers, making them a solid choice overall. Additionally, hemp rolling papers are usually unbleached and additive-free.

Inside-out for an even burn

Keep in mind that parts with overlapping paper burn more slowly than the rest of the joint. Try rolling inside-out joints to minimize paper overlapping and get that more even burn.

Transform into a twax joint

Twaxing is a term coined to describe the process of adding weed concentrates to the outside of the joint. Adding some hash either on the rolling paper or in the mix will slow burning speed and provide a stronger high. Remember, however, that twaxed joints are far more potent. Concentrates contain higher levels of cannabinoids and should be used only by experienced users who’ve developed a bit of a tolerance to THC.

Coat the joint with honey

If a joint can be coated with honey-like cannabis concentrates, why not coat it with real honey? Some experienced cannabis smokers report that coating the outside of the joint with honey helps slow the burn. For an added boost, consider sprinkling the honey-coated joint with some kief.
